Making Flanders develop into an international top destination for meetings and conferences, that is one of the main goals of Tourism Flanders. In addition to the regular quality and service of our meeting industry, there are also additional social challenges that we must be able to provide an answer to. The accessibility of the conference locations is certainly one of them. To assess the accessibility of a venue, the focus is on two major accessibility principles: Universal Design and the accessibility chain.

The Universal Design principle is striving for a smart approach that supports and satisfies as large and diverse a group of participants as possible. The efforts made in terms of accessibility not only benefit customers with disabilities, but also our own (or external) staff, pregnant women, ...

The chain of accessibility refers to the coherence of different aspects. Not only the infrastructural side is important, but also good communication, customer-friendliness, logical signage, ...

The label accessible meeting infrastructure

A meeting location can distinguish itself and be certified with the protected label "accessible meeting infrastructure".

The label, which exists in three levels, guarantees to organizers of meetings and congresses that your building is accessible to everyone. The label does not only contain criteria for wheelchair users, but also for people with an auditory or visual impairment.

  • M: Basic Accessible: Some extra help and effort may be required
  • M +: easily accessible
  • M ++: highly accessible

The label shows at a glance what your customer can expect. For people with a disability, such information is decisive whether or not to participate in a conference or meeting.
